Little Hexes is music for your brain and ears, playing mischief with just about every rock genre. The band’s lyrical repertoire includes odes to a pissed-off Cleopatra, Marie Curie’s unfortunate love affair with Radium, Phineas Gage’s 1848 metamorphosis from all-around nice guy to womanizing lout via a metal spike through the head, and an every-boy’s-(or-girl’s)-fantasy tribute to the Swiss Miss Girl. Little hexes also delivers idiosyncratic mash ups that leave you with confounding earworms.
Spiricles is a newly emerging but vastly experienced Northwest-based alternative rock band, an offshoot of longtime Portland band the Unknown Soldiers. They began as a collaboration between guitarists Al Paschke and Sylvia Hackathorn, creating hard-edged but poetic songs carefully honed and passionately played. Paschke and Hackatorn are joined by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Beth Harrington (Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, Rick Berlin’s Awful Truth), drummer Clayton Silva (Clorox Girls, Sewers of Paris), bass player Arthur Beardsley (Pink TV, Rancho Notorious, Bonnie Bentley and the New Creatures,) and Shannon Zilka playing violin and keyboards (Shotgun Wedding, Worn Out Shoes).
